How to choose a back-up emergency generator for your home.
We realize that initial cost is an important issue, but it’it's not the whole story, before deciding, remember no matter which generator you choose, installation costs will be similar, and will be a very significant portion of your total outlay,
Engine RPM.
An air cooled DIY Superstore Generator will run at 3,600 rpm as opposed to the 1,800 rpm of a premium water cooled Kohler Generator. High rpm has two immediate effects on the longevity of the generator; Firstly, and perhaps not as it might appear at first, double the rpm does not mean half the life span, in fact it means the engine will wear out, and be useless 4 times faster, because the faster the generator turns the more heat and friction it produces, these are killers of machinery. Just like your car, drive it on average at 60mph it might last for 100,000 miles, or drive it at 120mph, do you think it will last 50,000?
Cooling method.
Many budget generators are air cooled while larger premium generators are water cooled. Air cooled generators can not supply more cooling when the load increases, they simply get hotter. This means that somewhere the manufacturer must make a compromise at your expense. Too little load from your home and the generator will run too cold, increasing friction and hence shortening life span. Or the manufacturer might, (and probably will) choose to have the correct temperature at a medium load, so what happens when your AC or furnace kicks in? High load, and that equals high temperature, and short life, as the engine oil and bearings try to cope with the increased friction. In the same scenario with water cooled generators the cooling thermostat simply opens to increase cooler water flow to the engine thus stabilizing temperature
Inertia
The heavier the moving parts of the engine and the generator head, the more inertia they have.
Now let's take an example here. Say your home, on average takes 10KW of power, does that mean you need a 10KW generator ? Not at all, motor loads such as air conditioning or fridge/freezers etc. typically demand 3 times the KW power to start than they do to run, this means you' will need a 30KW generator or run the very high risk of burning out every motor in your home. There is a solution however, the larger the weight and inertia of the moving parts of the generator, and the heavier duty the windings of the generator head are, the better it can support momentary high loads. A premium 10KW generator in our example might be able to sustain a 200% or 20KW output for the second or so required for motor load start up, where a cheaper generator will typically sustain only 125% or 12.5 KW due to its light weight, low inertia, and thin armature windings.
Now comparing apples for apples you see a whole different story, in our 10KW home example you would need a 24KW budget generator, or only a 15KW Premium generator to provide the 300% overload required for air conditioning start up.

When you add all the pros and cons, pricing a 24KW to a 15KW and factoring the similar substantial installation costs, and a generator life 4 times longer, it’is not difficult to see where the best long term deal lies.
The life expectancy "X" in our example depends on a great many factors, but all these factors will be equal for the same location and loads of any given installation. Let's put some typical numbers to this example to see a true cost comparison.
